MyGeorgianSouthern continued its program and physical expansion. With the development of graduate programs in many fields and related research, the institution was granted university status at Georgia Southern University in 1990.
MyGeorgianSouthern University began as the first agricultural and mechanical district school, a land grant university under federal law and support. It was opened in 1908 with four teachers and 15 students. In 1965, eleven years after the United States Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education (1954),the university admitted its first students. Georgia Governor Eugene Talmadge fired university president Marvin Pittman in 1941 for supporting racial integration. He was eventually reinstated.

The university offers over 140 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. In 2010, Georgia Southern received approval to offer three new engineering degrees: a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
